Sikandar AlamThe legendary singer and one of the Trio ( Akshaya, Pranab and Sikandar) of Odia music Industry , Sikandar Alam is no more among us. The legendary singer passed away, today, August 8, 2010, at Kar Clinic in Bhubaneswar. He was 71 years old. On last Thursday, August 5, Alam complained of chest pain and got fainted. He was immediately transferred to the Kar Clinic in Bhubaneswar where the doctors found him bleeding internally. The doctors were able to stop the bleeding; however, he then suffered a serious heart attack and was almost in a coma since then. In spite of the tremendous efforts by doctors, his condition did not improve. He passed away early this morning leaving behind his wife and two daughters Sofia and Nazia.

Odiamusic along with its visitors pay its tribute to the legendary singer.

Some flash back of his life.

The odia music industry and odisha lost one of its legendary singer who contributed to make that Golden Era of Odia Music back in 60s and 70s. His pronunciation of Odia Lyrics was crystal clear and perhaps the best among all the singers of odisha.

My tribute to the legend may his soul rest in peace.

“….Patita Pabana Bana Au Kete Belaku. Bhasi Gali Bhaba Jale Naaba Dia Kulaku…”

It is a terrible news in the morning. Yesterday I was getting nostalgic with a lot of music of him…..He was so close to our hearts it is really unthinkable. Another legend of Odia music joined the stars…may his soul live in peace with the blessings of Jaga….

  3. Life lives, life dies. Life laughs, life cries. Life gives up and life tries. But life looks different through everyone’s eyes.Love is stronger than death even though it can’t stop death from happening, but no matter how hard death tries it can’t separate people from love. It can’t take away our memories either. In the end, life is stronger than death.I don’t know how it will affect our odia music industry but the loss of a very good soul always affects the mankind. It’s a great loss for me personally cuz he had always showed me the by his songs and his encouragement to the younsters. May ‘Allah’ bless his soul.

  5. Subhas Mohapatra , NC USA says:

It was 1961-64. I do not remember the exact year and date. I was the faculty advisor for the Cultural week of Bhadrak College, which was inaugurated by then CM Biju Patnaik (his first term). Not being familiar with cultural heros of Odisha, I asked our student union President and his friends to prepare a list of people they would like to book. There was a long list that included the names of Sikandar Alam, Akshya Mohanty, Pranab Patnaik, and many others. I put Mr. Alam on the top of the list but our students wanted Akshya Mohanty on the top. They asked me why. I told them Bhadrak town’s population majority at that time were Muslims. Mr. Alam not only represented secularism of the highest order but he was also the most visible non-hindu devotee of Lord Jagannath. Our pride and pleasure should reflect his. Our students immediately agreed with me and Mr. Alam presented his songs in the opening night.

I was his personal host and arranged his stay in our bachelor lecturers’ quarters behind the amphi-theater so I can look after his comforts personally. But I forgot that I had the morning practical class and had to leave without doing any thing for him. I sent the student union president to him with an apology letter. I was surprised when I saw him coming to my class to thank me for selecting him ahead of Akshya Mohanty. Then he said “I will never forget the credit you gave me on secularism, which no one has acknowledged to date”. It was obvious to me that our student body president had already briefed him about my decision.

Then decades passed and Mr. Alam once came to USA to one of the OSA conventions. I introduced myself and reminded him that we had met at Bhadrak College in connection with the cultural week. He was gracious enough to say in Odia “Mohapatra Babu, mu jetebele apanku duraru dekhili mu bhabili apana nischaya sei loka jie ki mate bahut sradha dekheithile. Mu sekatha keve bhulini”.

I was amazed that he still remembered and recognized me. He was indeed a classy person. May his soul rest in peace.

  7. Sujit Das, Washington DC says:

During my childhood when I hear him singing jagganath janana, my mind instantly would relate him to Salabega! Here is a man, who by birth is Muslim, but when he sings bhajans, you can feel the devotion. He was such a versatile singer and can sing almost any song, bhajana, classical, romantic, sad songs…When I sing his songs to my two little boys, next day invariably they will try to hum the tune…NITI JAA EIE BATE..EITHI TA DEKHA HUE…

He has inspired a generation of Odia music lovers and will continue to inspire the youngest generation, many of them like my two little boys…
